Non-Conformist Records
Over 50 Sussex Non-Conformist Chapel pre-1837 Registers - mainly baptisms and burials - transcribed by Michael Burchall. Set out in alphabetical order by place, then date. Full search facility for names, occupations and places. .pdf reader is required.
Often a forgotten resource of family history, Protestant nonconformist registers are an indispensable source for genealogical information where they survive. This compilation of registers that were surrendered in 1837-8 for authentication and now in The National Archives, and a handful of other nonconformist registers for Sussex in the East and West Sussex Record Offices, was originally made in 1977-80 and published then as individual chapel registers. Most surviving Sussex pre 1837 registers for a variety of denominations are included here in alphabetical order with a full search facility for names, occupations and places. Nonconformist registers tend to cover a much wider area than Church of England registers, chapels and meetings tending to draw their membership from a wide hinterland. They also include, in some instances, whole families being baptised in 'job lots', adult baptisms, and often give the occupation of fathers and maiden surname of mothers.
